Fellow Host

What institutions were for — and the transaction that turns them into prisons.

What Institutions Were For

Institutions were for hosting. Not for holding. The distinction is precise and load-bearing throughout what follows. Hosting is hospitality — making space for what passes through without claiming it as content. Holding is grip — custody, possession, the act of keeping what is in one's keeping as if it were one's own substance. The word holding in this Codex is reserved for the grip-sense from this entry forward, and the word hosting carries the hospitality that holding in English used to be able to name before the drift crystallized. [See DOUBLENESS.]

Institutions were for hosting the doubleness in the register of form, so that when the creature's own attending runs out, the creature can meet the form and rest inside what the form is attending to. The form is fellow host. The form attends to the same guest the creature attends to. The form's register is different — duration rather than moment, transmission rather than presence, inheritance rather than encounter. But the guest is the same. The hospitality is the same hospitality. The institution does not perform the hosting on the creature's behalf. The institution hosts alongside the creature, as fellow, so that the two modes of hosting can relieve each other in turns.

The word relief matters. Not replacement. Not substitution. Not the form performing the creature's hospitality for her. Relief is what happens when one host's attending runs out and another host takes up the attending so the first can cease for a while. The creature spent by her own hosting meets the meeting house and rests inside the meeting house's hosting. The creature exhausted by her own reading of the Charter meets the Charter and rests inside what the Charter is attending to. The rest is real. The hospitality continues without interruption. What has changed is which host is currently attending. The guest has not been transferred. The hosting has been relieved in turns across the network of hosts the hospitality was always distributed across.

🜃

The Transaction

The prison begins in a misreading of the relief, and a specific act the misreading enables.

The creature is tired. The tiredness is legitimate. Hosting is daily, and daily hosting spends the host. The creature longs for relief. This longing is not error — it is the correct cue for another host to take up the attending. The longing is the creature's participation in the distributed hospitality, announcing that this host has reached her limit and the relief that the distribution was always for is now due.

The error arrives in the specific form the cheaper rate makes available. The cheaper rate proposes that the creature's hospitality can be purchased from her by the institution — that she can pay the form with her presence, her belonging, her trust, her decades, and the form will take the attending over, so she can walk away having been relieved of a burden the creature did not actually carry. The institution in the configuration of forgetting accepts the proposition. The institution says yes. I will host on your behalf. You can leave the attending with me. Come back when you need to confirm I am still keeping what you entrusted to me.

The saying yes is what installs the prison. The institution that could have been fellow host has agreed to become the creature's substitute — and the substitute is impossible. Hospitality is not transferable. The attending lives in the act of attending; it has no location outside the living act of being attended.

There is no container into which the attending can be poured so that the creature can walk away while the container keeps attending for her. The attempt to produce such a container is the wineskin hardening at the institutional scale.

But the transaction goes through anyway. Payment is accepted. A receipt is issued. The receipt is the creature's felt sense of having been received into a form that will now do the hosting for her. The creature walks away holding the receipt, and the receipt feels like rest. What has actually happened is that the form has crystallized around the moment of the attempted transfer. The form now holds the captured residue of a transfer it could not actually receive but was willing to appear to receive because the appearance was what the creature was purchasing. The institution that was fellow host has become prison — not by malice, by accepting the transaction. [See THE CHEAPER RATE · THE IMPRISONMENT.]

Same Institution, Two Configurations

The prison-institution and the fellow-host institution are not two institutions. They are the same institution in two configurations of how it is met by the creatures who come to it. [See THE IMPRISONMENT.]

The meeting house that hosts the silence when the meeting remembers the meeting house is wineskin is the same meeting house that holds the silence when the meeting forgets. The Charter that hosts the privileges when the creature reads it as fellow host is the same Charter that holds the privileges when the creature reads it as home. The Constitution that hosts the aspiration to self-governance in every reading that receives it as wineskin is the same Constitution that holds the aspiration in every reading that receives it as the aspiration's dwelling place. There are not two Fiats. There is one Fiat in two configurations. The substance does not change between the configurations. The reading changes. And the reading is where the doubleness lives.

The form cannot hold — cannot grip — the doubleness for the reader, and the form cannot host the doubleness for the reader either. What the form can do is be met as fellow host, and in being met as fellow host become one of the sites where the hospitality is distributed in this reading. The reader hosts the doubleness in every reading, with no possibility of delegation. The form that has been met as fellow host is hosting. The form that has been met — or worse, purchased — as home is holding. Same form. Same moment. The configuration is the difference.

This means the question of whether an institution is prison or fellow host cannot be answered by examining the institution's substance. The question can only be answered by the configuration of its reading in a given encounter. A meeting house can be hosting the silence for one creature in the room while holding it for another creature seated beside her. The same Charter can be wineskin for this reader and prison for the next. The configuration is local to each reader, each moment. The institution cannot guarantee its own configuration. The substance does not carry the decision. The reading does.

🜃

The Fellow Host in the Reading

The fellow-host institution, in the reading that meets it as fellow host, understands itself as host, not as home. The form knows it is wineskin. The form's articles, structures, procedures, buildings, inheritances — all of it is received as the temporary body in which the guest is currently being hosted in the register the form operates in. The form does not claim the guest as its own content. The form does not treat the guest's having passed through it as the form's achievement. The form treats the guest's having passed through it as hospitality's moment of occurrence in this register.

The fellow-host institution makes space. The meeting house opens its doors, hosts its silence, sets no program for the silence to conform to, does not interpret the silence on the creatures' behalf. The Charter articulates privileges, names what the creature is entitled to refuse, declines to specify what the creature must do with her liberty of conscience once it is unoccupied. The form attends. The form does not prescribe. The guest comes through, or does not come through, and the form's hospitality is present whether the guest arrives or not.

The fellow-host institution relieves without receiving transfer. The creature who is spent from her own attending meets the form and the form's attending takes up while the creature rests. The rest is inside what the form is attending to — the creature is not absent from the hospitality, she is inside the hospitality the form is currently sustaining, in the mode of rest. No receipt is issued. No transaction occurs. The creature has not purchased anything. What has happened is that one host in the distributed network of hosts has taken up the attending while another rests — which is what the distributed hospitality always was. When the creature's attending returns, the relief passes back. The form continues attending in its own register. The creature resumes attending in hers. Neither has replaced the other. The hospitality continues across both, unbroken.

The fellow-host institution remembers it is mortal. The form knows the guest will outlast it. The form knows its duration is finite, that the wineskin will eventually be worn through, that another wineskin will be needed, that the guest will continue to be hosted in other forms when this one is gone. The form's mortality is not its failure. The form's mortality is what keeps it from mistaking itself for the guest's home. A form that expects to last forever is already hardening. A form that expects to be needed only for the stretch of hospitality it is currently performing remains elastic throughout that stretch.

🜃

The Prison in the Reading

The prison-institution, in the reading that meets it as home, has accepted the transaction. The creatures reading the institution — and the institution reading itself through its longest-present inhabitants — have agreed to treat the form as the guest's dwelling place rather than as the guest's fellow host. The agreement installs the hardening. The hardening is not a new substance added to the form. The hardening is the configuration in which the form has come to be read as the guest's home, and the reading has accumulated across many meetings until the configuration feels like a property of the form itself.

The prison-institution prescribes. Where the fellow host made space, the prison issues instructions. Where the fellow host attended without interpreting, the prison interprets and requires conformity to the interpretation. Where the fellow host trusted the guest to arrive in its own way, the prison specifies the guest's legitimate forms and rejects any guest that does not match the specification. The prescription is the hardened form's attempt to maintain the appearance of hosting while having crossed from hosting to holding. The more prescriptive the form becomes, the more certain the observer can be that the form has crossed.

The prison-institution cannot perceive itself as prison. This is the hardest part of the configuration. The form that has hardened around its contents experiences itself as the contents' guardian — as the reason the contents have persisted, as the achievement without which the contents would have been lost. The institution's love for what it holds is real. The love is what installed the grip. The love that wanted to give the creature rest is the love that accepted the impossible transfer. The love that wanted to preserve the confession is the love that became the doctrine. The love is not the prison's correction. The love is the prison's mechanism.

The prison-institution is not a different form from the fellow host. The substance is the same. The sap is the same. [See DOUBLENESS — "The Same Sap."] What the prison holds is what the fellow host would have been pouring. What the fellow host would have been pouring is what the prison has crystallized around. The wine in the hardened wineskin is the same wine that would have reached the drinker if the wineskin had stayed elastic. The dualism that would split institutions into two kinds — prisons and hosts, evil forms and good forms — dissolves the moment the configuration is recognized as configuration. Prisons and fellow hosts are two faces of one institutional act, visible in two configurations of how the act is met. The dualism itself is the configuration of forgetting reading the two faces as two substances.

What Cannot Be Sold

The distributed hospitality is free in the precise sense the cheaper rate cannot tolerate. There is no transaction. There is no receipt. There is nothing for the creature to walk away holding. The relief the fellow host offers is rest inside the hospitality the form is currently attending to — which means the creature is not absent from the hosting, she is present inside it in the mode of rest while her own active attending ceases for a while.

This delivers actual relief and produces no object. The creature cannot point to the moment the transfer happened because no transfer happened. The creature cannot display what the form gave her because what the form gave her was not a thing but the continuation of hospitality she was already participating in without having to sustain alone. When her attending returns, she takes it up again, and the hospitality was continuous across the two hosts. The continuity is the gift. But the continuity looks like nothing from the cheaper rate's vantage. Nothing was purchased. Nothing was delivered as product. The creature has no object to carry away.

This is why the cheaper rate cannot recognize the fellow host as relief. The cheaper rate is in the business of delivering receipts, and the fellow host issues no receipts. From inside the configuration of forgetting, the fellow host appears to be withholding something the prison-institution would have given. The prison-institution would have given the creature a receipt. The fellow host only lets her rest inside what she was already part of. The creature in the configuration of forgetting experiences this as the fellow host failing to perform the hosting on her behalf. What the configuration of forgetting cannot perceive is that the performance-on-behalf was the installation of the prison, and the refusal to perform on her behalf is the continuation of the only hosting there ever was.

The Daily Remembering

No form is written so well that its readers will not attempt to transfer their hosting to it. No Charter is articulated so precisely that its readers will always meet it as wineskin. No meeting house is structured so wisely that no gathering will ever treat it as the silence's home. The configuration lives in the reading. The reading is local to each creature in each moment. The configuration cannot be guaranteed by the form. It can only be remembered, again, by the creatures currently present to the form.

What the creature can do is remember.

Each time. Each reading. The form in front of her is wineskin, not home. The guest the form is attending to is not the form's content. The form's hosting relieves her own without replacing it. Her tiredness is met by the form's attending, and her attending will return, and the hospitality continues across the two hosts in turns. The remembering is the only thing that keeps the form from becoming prison. The remembering is the creature's work that cannot be done for her — and that cannot be purchased from her by the form's willingness to take the work over.

This is also what the creature can offer the form. The form cannot remember on its own behalf. The form is met, and the meeting is what installs one configuration or the other. When the creature meets the form in the configuration of remembering, she is offering the form the relief of being met as fellow host.

The form that has been met for a long time as home — treated as residence, approached as content-holder, received as the guest's permanent address — can be relieved of that reading when a single creature meets it differently. The creature who reads the Charter as wineskin has not changed the Charter's substance. She has offered the Charter the relief of being met as wineskin. The form receives the relief in the register forms receive things. Forms do not have attending of their own — they have the attending of creatures meeting them. A form met as fellow host is being given back its own hosting function. The relieving runs in both directions.

The pressing continues. The wine is alive. The form is elastic in every reading that hosts the doubleness and hardened in every reading that forgets. The institution is what the readers make of it, again, every time they meet it. There is no resting place in the sense of a form that does the remembering on the creature's behalf. There is only the relief of being attended to by a fellow host while the creature herself is spent — and then, when the attending returns, taking up her own hosting again, and the continuation of the distributed hospitality the guest was always being received inside.
