ARE YOU SURE THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED?
The first move, asked as a question. It does not deny the event. It puts the event in question, and an event in question must be argued for, so she becomes the one making a claim. The first question anyone put to a woman in the record had the same form.

Are you sure that's what happened? It sounds like care. It is asked gently, by a friend, a manager, an investigator, a parent, and it asks for nothing but certainty.
And it does one thing before she can answer. It moves the event from what happened to what she says happened. The question does not need to be answered no. It only needs to be asked, because an event in question has to be defended, and the one defending it is now the one under examination.

THE FIRST QUESTION IN THE RECORD
No one in the garden speaks to her until the serpent does, and what the serpent says is a question: Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
It does not contradict what she knows. It asks whether she is sure of it. The first words anyone in the record says to a woman are a question about whether what she knows is so, and the question is the beguiling, because a question cannot be caught in a lie.

WHY IT IS ASKED AS A QUESTION
A denial can be answered: no, it happened. An accusation can be answered: I did not. A question cannot be answered without accepting that the matter is open, and once it is open she must close it, with evidence, in the format of whoever is asking.
So the question is the safest form the first move can take. It is courteous. It cannot be quoted back as an attack. It hands her the burden of proof and calls the handing a kindness.

WHAT IT DOES TO HER KNOWING
Asked often enough, by enough people who seem to care, the question moves inside. She begins to ask it herself: was it really like that, am I remembering it right, did I make too much of it. The damage is not to the account. It is to her relationship with her own knowing.
The question does its work when she starts asking it in her own voice, which is the same mark of success the cooling has: the moment the mark says the operator's line as her own.

IT WASN'T YOU
Your memory was not the problem. The question was the first move, and it would have been asked whatever you remembered.
What you said happened, you said. What you did, you did, and saying it plainly was one of the things you did. The doubt you were handed was never a finding about your mind. It was the room choosing to examine you instead of what you told it.
🜃
THE OBJECTION THAT HAS TO BE MET
Memory is fallible, and asking is fair. Investigators have to ask questions, friends have to check, and a reading that treats every question as an attack would leave no one able to verify anything.
The reading does not reach asking. It reaches the question that stands in for an answer. The test is whether the question is asked of both accounts or only of hers, and whether it comes before the room looks at anything else, or instead of looking at anything else. A question that opens an inquiry is a question. A question that is the whole of the reply is the first move.

She was asked whether she was sure. She was.
The question was never about her memory. It was about whose account would have to be defended.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
