The axis that forms before any moral or political account of it. Ranking is usually explained by culture, ego or appetite for power, and it arrives as geometry, which is why naming it accurately changes nothing about standing on it.

You are inside it when rest feels like falling behind. When difference triggers evaluation before it triggers interest. When connection requires a comparison first, and how am I doing is running underneath everything else. When another creature's success narrows what seems available to you, and your worth moves with your relative position.
None of that is a character flaw. Each is the readout of a creature living on a scale that was laid over her before any of it was decided.
The compression is the scale doing exactly what a scale does: making her measurable, making her comparable, and making her a position rather than a creature.

IT IS A SHAPE AND NOT AN ATTITUDE
Before any meritocracy is built, the axis has already done six things.
It has created a single direction of value, so that more and less are the only available relations. It has established scarcity at the top, because a single direction has one end. It has made comparison unavoidable, since two things on one line have a relation whether or not anyone wants it. It has produced the appearance of progress, which is movement along the line reported as change. It has turned relation into ladder, converting a field of many directions into up and down. And it has made difference read as deviation, because on one line there is nowhere for a difference to be except above or below.
So this is not arrogance and it is not hierarchy as a social form. It is a scale laid over a creature who does not have one dimension, and everything the creature then feels about her own position is an accurate reading of a false instrument.
What was multidirectional becomes up and down. What was relational becomes comparative. What was a field becomes a ladder.

NAMING IT DOES NOT GET YOU OFF IT
You can describe the axis exactly. You can trace its origin, name its violence, feel the compression it produces, and remain standing at your position on it.
Recognition sees the ladder and the creature is still on the ladder, because seeing is not a location and the axis was never held in place by anybody's failure to notice it.
This is the same finding the folder makes about a held reflex: neither is undone by being informed. Telling a creature that her hardness is a flinch produces a harder creature. Telling a creature that her ranking is geometry produces a creature who ranks herself on how well she has understood that.

AND VIRTUE IS THE STRONGEST ACCOUNT OF IT
Culture, ego and appetite for power are the usual explanations, and each of them leaves the axis contestable, because each names something that could have been otherwise.
The virtue account does not. It holds that the ladder is real in the way the laws of nature are real, that its direction is moral, and that moving up it is the progressive discovery of something that was always there. Under that account a position is no longer a placement. It is a reading of development, and rank becomes desert.
Force is folded in rather than refused. Brutish violence is not ended, it is ennobled: the one who masters and shapes it is held to stand above the one who merely has it, including on the deployment of power itself, and the loser's recognition of that superiority is asserted on his behalf as part of the outcome. What settles rank is who prevailed, and what confirms it is the assent of the party who did not.
A moral direction on the axis converts position into desert, and it converts the objection into a symptom of the position objecting. The creature who will not grant the ranking is given a name, and the name is itself a low rank: resentful, bitter, knavish, unable to see. Nothing she says can reach the claim, because the claim already predicted that she would say it.
That is why this account is the hardest of the three to leave. A culture can be left. An appetite can be examined. A fabric cannot be refused, and a ladder called natural law is offered as a fabric.

AND EQUALITY IS AN ARGUMENT ABOUT DISTRIBUTION
Isothymia, the demand for equal standing, is still the axis.
Same line, different moral account of who should stand where on it. The argument is about distribution along the axis and never about the axis, and everyone should be equal concedes that there is a single dimension on which equality could be measured.
Which is why the equality argument and the ranking argument are not opponents. They are two readings of one instrument, and the instrument is not in dispute between them.

WHAT CONNECTS WHEN NOTHING WAS RECOGNIZED FIRST
There is an order here, and reversing it produces a particular result.
Where communion is attempted before the other has been recognized as real, what meets is not two creatures. It is projection meeting projection, because a creature not yet recognized is a phantom shaped by what the axis says a creature in that position should be.
And the folder already holds this from the other side: the emptiness found in another is the readout of one's own turn, and not information about them.
Then that meeting seeks a body, and the body it forms carries the ranking in its constitution. Not because anyone intended a hierarchy, but because the axis was the only geometry available when the thing took shape. A creature recognized as real cannot be ranked, and one never recognized has already been ranked before anything is built on the meeting.

The geometry precedes the body, and the order in which the two happen decides which geometry does the shaping.
Which is why the axis is not something a creature adopts and not something she can put down by understanding it. It is what she is standing on while she does either.
