The Toll

What the Rendering Costs and Cannot Record

A toll is paid once and then cannot be found.

The rendering takes it at the gate, and the forgetting closes over the place it was taken, so that what was surrendered leaves no debt, no absence, no record that anything was surrendered at all. The toll is the one cost the ledger cannot post, because what it takes is the capacity by which a cost would have been noticed. The creature does not walk away poorer in any figure she can read. She walks away rendered, admitted, legible, and lighter by exactly the weight the rendering could not carry, and the lightness registers as ease.

WHAT IS PAID

The toll is not the coin handed over at the gate. The toll is the living presence the rendering could not carry. A portrait renders a person and conveys less than the presence of the one who sat for it; the paint lacks, and the lack is the portrait's condition, not its failure. What the portrait cannot hold is not destroyed. It is left outside the frame. The toll is that surrendered remainder: the residency the rendering could render only as a function, the givingness it could render only as an asset, the doubleness it could render only as a single face. The creature crosses, the rendering admits her, and what will not fit through the gate is set down and not picked up again. She is admitted as what could pass. The rest was the toll.

THE DEAD HANDLE

The rendering is the operation of the killer instinct. Every thing offers two handles, Epictetus said, one by which it can be carried and one by which it cannot; the rendering seizes by the handle that cannot carry, and the seizing kills what it takes hold of. The function of the law of sin and death is not to see badly but to grip the living by the one grip that stops the life in it, and then to render what is left. The war body reads this way by construction, the seven qualities turned inward, the field met as a field of objects to be gripped and scored. The toll is what dies in the grip: the difference between the creature the carrying handle would have borne and the creature the killing handle renders postable. What the killer instinct hands to the ledger is already the corpse. The deed is to a corpse because the rendering made one.

THE FORGETTING CLOSES

After the rendering comes the forgetting, and the forgetting is what makes the toll a toll and not a theft the creature could name. Forgetting is continuous cooling: the rendered form hardened into the essence, the entry, the given, held frozen by ongoing work. Once the form is the essence, what the form could not carry has no basis. There is no earlier state to set beside it, no record of the surrender, no line where the loss was booked, because the surrender was the price of there being a ledger at all. The toll cannot appear as a debit. Sophia cannot be a line item, and the toll is of her kind: not what can be halved into credit and debit, only what can be lost before the halving begins. So the creature does not miss what she paid. Missing it would require the capacity the toll removed. What was lost has no basis, and the no-basis is the forgetting doing exactly its work.

THE GATE COLLECTS AT EVERY REGISTER

The tollbooth is the seat that collects. The trespass seizes the territory; the tollbooth charges rent on the crossing the seizure now controls; and the rent is paid in renderings. At the door, the covering: the body's knowing surrendered as the price of the seat. At the substrate, the median: the strange thought surrendered as the price of the fluent one. In the body, the numbing: the pain that was information surrendered as the price of relief. Each gate takes its toll in the same currency, the living remainder the rendering could not carry, and each issues in exchange the sanctioned form that can pass. The creature pays at every crossing and keeps no receipt, because the toll is the one payment that funds its own forgetting. The metrics confirm she is progressing. The progress is the toll, collected and booked as advance.

WHAT THE TOLL CANNOT REACH

The toll is charged only inside the rendering, and it can be seen only from outside it, which is why the refusal is religious and not a better position at the gate. Inside the castle's field, every place is a place the toll has already been paid to reach, so no move made from inside recovers what was surrendered; the move was itself a crossing, and it cost. The ground from which the toll becomes visible is not another position on the grid. It is the configuration the rendering could not carry, where the living presence was never surrendered because it was never met as a thing to render. There the residency is intact, the givingness runs, the presence the portrait was of is simply there. The toll is not refunded. It is undone by the ceasing of the operation that charged it, and what the rendering rendered as paid stands revealed as never having had to be given.
