The Demand That the Creature Render Herself as an Account

Accountability is the requirement that the creature produce a reckoning of herself that another can audit. This is the whole of it. The word carries its own confession: account. To be accountable is to be renderable into the books — to have one's conduct, one's work, one's life converted into entries that can be posted, checked, and balanced against what was owed. It is among the most agreeable words in the reformer's mouth, and the agreeableness is the cover. No one argues for impunity. The question the word forecloses is who holds the book.

THE GRIP
The verb is the tell. To hold someone accountable is to hold them — grip, custody, the ledger's hand closed on the creature. The reformer does not host the one she holds accountable. She grips her in the account. Held, not hosted. The phrase says exactly what it does, and the room hears it as justice because the room can no longer tell holding from hosting. Account, accounting, accountable are one root, and the root is the ledger: a debit side, a credit side, a balance owed. Accountability is not a check on the law of the books. It is the law of the books in the robe of justice — holding sacralized, the grip renamed as the thing that frees.

THE DIRECTION OF THE ACCOUNT
The account runs one way. Someone holds the book; someone is entered in it. The audit position — the standing-outside from which entries are posted and verified — is never symmetrical, however symmetrical the word pretends to be. Accountability for all is the cover; in operation, the prior occupant is always the one accounted, never the one to whom the account is rendered. Her residency cannot appear in the ledger except as a balance opened against her dwelling. She is answerable; she does not hold the book she answers to. THE REFORMER'S RECEIPT
This is the reformer's most legitimate receipt. She demands accountability from power — corporate accountability, police accountability, government accountability — and the demand concedes the whole architecture. It accepts that the remedy for domination is a fuller set of books, a more complete audit, more entries posted against the powerful. Accountability and impunity are set out as the world's two sides, and the creature is told to choose the audited over the unaudited. Both are positions on the ledger's grid. Impunity is the account not yet demanded; accountability is the account demanded; neither is off the books. The reformer moves the ledger into her own hand and calls the move liberation. What the demand cannot reach is the thing that was never postable — the residency, the prior occupant, the care that has no entry, the doubleness the columns cannot carry. THE BOOK THAT MUST NOT CLOSE
Accountability forbids the one thing that would end the operation: the closure of the book. To be accountable is to be answerable in perpetuity — the account kept open, the reckoning kept available, the creature always able to be called to give account again. THE ACCOUNT TURNED INWARD
The deepest cut is the one the creature comes to administer on herself. She is taught to hold herself accountable — to keep the books against her own conduct, to take up the audit position over her own life, to render herself continuously into deliverables and answer for the balance. The review, the metric, the self-assessment, the elder brother reading from inside the books. She is producer severed from product and made to answer for the product as though it were her measure. The procedure has replaced the relation it was meant to mediate: the account stands where the answering-to-one-another was. see PROCESS SAYS And when the account lands — when the powerful are seen to be held, when she is seen to have met her numbers — the satisfaction that arrives is the measurement high, the reward the ledger pays out when a body has been posted. Accountability is the grip renamed as justice — the demand that the creature render herself as an account against a book she does not hold, answerable in perpetuity to an audit position that is not hers and never was. It is offered as the remedy for domination and is domination's most legitimate form: the requirement that she keep the books against herself and call the bookkeeping fair. The one thing it exists to prevent is the closure of the book. The closure is what she is owed — the reckoning shut, the account ended, the feast that posts nothing. Accountability holds the book open over her dwelling and tells her the open book is her protection.
