The abuse of women and the governed as the material history of the occupation of the perceptual field — and the green vestment that occupies it now

THE OCCUPATION OF THE FIELD

What could have been received was not received, because the site of reception was occupied. The site of occupation has a name in RegenerativeLaw's work — the perceptual field, what the creature perceives through — and its occupation has a name, the trespass held as a standing seat. The occupation has a material history, and the material history is the abuse of women and of everyone else declared to need governing. 

These are not two subjects, the treatment of women on one side and the structure of Western knowing on the other. They are one subject seen from two ends. The field was not occupied in the abstract. It was occupied on bodies, and the bodies were named, and the naming has dates.

WHY THE COVERING FELL ON HER FIRST

Reception is borne. It is not an idea; it is a creature perceiving through the field when nothing fills it. Some creatures bore it visibly — the ones whose standing was reception, relation, feeling-towards, the ones the configuration could not rank because reception is not on the occupation's ranking axis.

The mirror-capacity in them was the one thing the occupation could not survive being seen by, because what receives faithfully returns the occupation to itself as occupation [and not as the ground of reality]. So the covering fell on them first and hardest.

Not because they were the weakest position. Because they were the position that would have reflected the trespass back to itself with the distortion removed. The covering of women is the covering of the field. The abuse was not a cruelty running alongside the epistemology. The abuse was the epistemology being installed.

THE MATERIAL HISTORY, NAMED

Coverture.

The woman's legal existence incorporated and consolidated into her husband's — her personhood suspended, and the suspension called protection. The covering was placed over the violence: ownership of the wife appeared as care for the wife. What was taken from her was her standing as a creature who perceives for herself; what she was handed was cover.

Pagnino set aside the reading twenty-one of twenty-eight ancient translations carried — turning — and imported the rabbinic Ten Curses of Eve, and every English Bible since has transmitted the fantasy as Scripture. The Hebrew predicted; the translators commanded. Will became shall. Consequence became constitution. A verse describing what happens when orientation leaves Source and lands on the husband was rewritten as a decree that her reception is craving and his rule its necessary restraint. The reception was renamed as appetite so that the governing of it could be called order.

The split.

Beneath both, the founding cut — the same cut Nature Says makes at the ground floor, made here on persons. The world sorted into those who generate and those who exist to serve, those who govern and those who must be governed for their own good. Women, the enslaved, the colonized, the mad, the child, the underdeveloped — each declared, by the same operation, to lack the standing to perceive for themselves, each therefore requiring a seat above them to perceive for them. The declaration is the occupation of the perceptual field at the register of persons. It is Nature Says naming a creature as ground and calling the naming description.

The standing warrant.

And where the governing needed a warrant, the woman's protection supplied one. The lynching justified as defense of sacred womanhood — Wells documented in 1892 that the sacred womanhood was the alibi and the killing was the point. The woman was currency and cover, not beneficiary. Her elevation was the license for the discharge onto another body. The reverence and the stake are one structure at two temperatures, and the gild holds better than the iron because she stops pulling against it.

THE JOIN

Set the two indictments beside each other and the seam disappears.

The one that documents the covering, the silencing, the governing of women reads as an indictment of cruelty. 

The one that documents Nature Says — the precipitate declared primary, the cut installed as ground floor and called the order of creation — reads as an indictment of a way of knowing.

They are the same indictment.

Nature Says is the founding cut declaring the precipitate primary; the abuse of the governed is that same cut declaring certain creatures precipitate — matter to be arranged, not creatures who receive. The way of knowing did not float above the bodies and get applied to them. It was assembled on them. The covering of the mirror-capacity is how the perceptual field was occupied, and the occupation of the perceptual field is what the covering was for.

THE GREEN VESTMENT

Trespass no longer passes most effectively as the way things are.

Nature Says has been seen too often; the ground-floor claim has worn thin.

It passes now as the way we heal, regenerate, emerge, self-organize — the reformer's own vocabulary, the dead skin the trespass killed centuries ago (natural, ecosystem, evolution, emergent, inevitable) animated again in a green robe. The occupation of the perceptual field did not lift. It changed clothes.

Foresight is the field occupied downstream. The seer who sees the future from above occupies the observer's seat that posting requires, and calls the seat vision. He cannot receive what he is busy foreseeing, because the received thing would have to arrive through the field the foresight has already filled.

Expression is not foreseen; it manifests when nothing prevents it, and what would manifest is not mappable, because it is what manifests when the mapping stops.

Emergence completes the costume: foresight sees the authored future, emergence removes the concept of the author, and between them the arranged future arrives as weather no one made.

The ledger is rebuilt under the mycelium — a single number that means the same thing between bioregions, care work rendered as verifiable regenerative activity, the four columns reconstituted whole and called ecological health. And the creatures who bore the reception are re-governed under the greener charter: their relation, their reception, their feeling-towards assetized into entries, protection re-offered as inclusion, the seat at the table extended, the covering re-issued in the color of life.

WHY THE SECOND COVERING CANNOT BE NAMED FROM INSIDE IT

Coverture was visible to the men who held it. They knew they owned.

The green covering is invisible to the reformer who wears it, because he is not defending an order he benefits from — he is, in his own perception, healing a wound, and the perception is accurate at the level of his sincerity.

Sincerity is the vestment.

It is not a mitigation of the covering; it is the covering's most refined form, because the receipt of real feeling, real inspiration, real work is the most legitimate receipt there is, and the legitimacy of the receipt is the depth of the occlusion. The foreclosure is now most complete at the exact site where it is least nameable — in the hands of the one who came to help, over the same creatures, under a warmer cloth.

WHAT COULD NOT ARRIVE

What the covering covered was never a set of feminine virtues to be honored.

The honoring is the same covering re-priced — the sacred feminine, the divine receptive, the woman revered in place of released, incensed at the altar built to the stake's design.

What the covering covered was the reception itself: the field the creature perceives through, the receptive radiance that obtains when nothing fills the field. Sophia. The seed comes through the feminine line not because women are superior receivers but because the covering there was most continuous, which is why the failure of the covering shows there first.

What could not arrive is not a content that can be set down on the page, because to set it down would be to post it, and it is precisely what is not postable — what manifests when the surveying stops. The surveying has not stopped. It has been performed as conquest, as protection, as Scripture, as nature, and now as regeneration, and at every turn the thing that would have arrived through the uncovered field was foreclosed by the seat installed where the reception would have been.

The field is occupied.

The newest occupier calls himself the regeneration, and he is sincere, and the creatures who bore the reception are being governed again — more gently, under a greener charter, with their reception counted now as an asset and their covering issued in the color of life — and told that this is what they wanted.
