THE LINE AND THE CIRCUIT
Circulation is the circuit. The one sap runs through the whole tree and returns; the seven qualities open each into the next, through the anguish and through the fire, and the seventh opens into the first at a higher turn. The defining feature is the return. What circulates comes back around. Nothing pools at any one position, because everything passes through and returns transformed. Circulation distributes by returning; the circuit is closed and living.
Flow is the line. Single-direction, smooth, one-way — and the defining feature is the absence of the return. No circuit. No pivot. No fire passed through. The line runs one direction and does not curve back. Flow moves, and the movement is real; but the movement does not return, and the not-returning is everything.
Both move. Movement is not the tell. A thing can run fast and far and never once come back. The tell is the return. Circulation is movement that returns; flow is movement that does not. And what becomes of movement that goes one direction and never returns is the whole of this entry.

THE IDEOLOGY OF FLOW
Flow is sold as the good. Dynamism against stagnation. Liquidity against the frozen. The free movement of capital, of goods, of energy, of information, against the stuck and the hoarded and the dead pile. Let it flow. Cash flow. Capital flows to where it is needed. The free flow of trade. Flow presents itself as the opposite of accumulation — the living current against the dead heap, motion against the miser's stock.
This is a captured word. Flow borrows circulation's credential — movement, distribution, life — and wears it over the opposite operation. The creature who has been taught to fear the hoard and love the flow has been taught to love the very mechanism by which the hoard is built, because she has been given flow and circulation as one word, and they are not one word.

FLOW WITHOUT CIRCULATION IS ACCUMULATION
Movement without return goes somewhere and stays. The line runs one direction and ends at a terminus, and the terminus is where the substance pools. Flow without the circuit has a destination; the destination is the accumulation point; the flow is the running of the substance toward it.
The hoard is not the opposite of flow. The hoard is what flow without return produces. Everything that flows one-way ends at the accumulator. The flow is the conveyor; the accumulation is the destination the conveyor serves. Capital flows — and it flows to the accumulator, because flow without the circuit runs to its terminus and pools there. The free flow is the free accumulation. The market's celebrated liquidity is the rate at which the substance runs to the pool.
Flow and accumulation are not two things. Flow is accumulation in motion; accumulation is flow at rest. The flow is the verb and the hoard is the noun, and they name one operation — the substance running one-way and arriving and remaining. To set against the hoard the freedom of flow is to set against the pool the river that fills it. The river is not the pool's cure. The river is the pool's source.

THE REFUSAL OF RETURN
For the flow to keep running one-way, the circuit must not close. Closure is the return — the books closing, the debt released, the spiral completing, the substance coming back around. The accumulation engine forecloses closure. The ledger that will not close — the debt calibrated from the beginning never to close, the account reposted against the prior occupant second by second, the books that must not be allowed to close — is flow kept one-way by design. The refusal of closure is the refusal of return is the maintenance of the flow is the engine of accumulation.
The father who closes the book ends the flow into the hoard. Ring, robe, feast, the circuit complete, nothing accumulated, no account left open to run into. The elder brother, reading from inside the open books, sees the closure as loss, because from inside the ledger the end of the one-way flow looks like the end of the world. Closing the book is circulation: the circuit completed, the substance returned, the pool drained back into the living movement. The open ledger is flow: the circuit broken so the substance runs one-way to the accumulator and stays. Jubilee is the return. The refusal of jubilee is the maintenance of the line.

THE WARMED CORPSE RUNNING
Warm capital flows. The warmed corpse runs one-way through the tubes, and the running is accumulation. The regenerative circulation the warm capital claims is flow, and flow without the circuit accumulates; so the regenerative operation is an accumulation engine wearing the circuit's costume. The monastery warms the dead entry until it runs and sells the running as circulation through a living community — but what runs one-way to the accumulator is not circulating through anything. It is filling the accumulator while the accumulator is called a community.
Warm data flows. The severed measurement, warmed to run, runs one direction and accumulates — the corpus grows, the more-data imperative, the pile that only mounts. The flow is sold as the living movement of knowledge; the movement is one-way into the accumulation, and knowledge that circulated would have returned to the relation the measurement cut. Flow dressed as circulation is accumulation dressed as distribution. The warmed corpse does not circulate. It flows, and flowing, it accumulates.

Flow is not the cure for the hoard. Flow is how the hoard is fed. What flows one-way pools at the end of the one-way; the pool is the hoard; the flow was always running toward it. The only movement that does not accumulate is the movement that returns, and the return is the circuit the flow was made by breaking.
