The diagnoses keep landing on prefixes rather than on roots, and that is not a habit of method. The two laws are two configurations of one thing, so a language recording them will differ by direction and share the stem.

THE FINDING
Producing and conducting are one verb. Attending and pretending are one verb. Paradox and heterodoxy are one construction. In each case the operation the work had already found to be opposed turned out to be one root under two prefixes, and the opposition lives entirely in the direction.
This should be surprising and it is not. If trespass theology and residency were two different things, the vocabulary naming them would have two different stems. It does not. It has one stem and two headings, repeatedly, across languages with no contact.
Which makes the morphology evidence rather than ornament. A shared root is what you would expect to find if the doctrine is right that there is one operation being pointed two ways, and it is not what you would expect to find if there were two substances.

ONE VERB, NINE POSITIONS
Sedere, to sit. Take the prefixes off it and the entire configuration is standing in the room, and every party in it is seated.
Re-sidere: to sit back, to remain behind when the others have gone. She is the resident. The residue is what is left when everything removable has been removed, and it is the same word.
Prae-sidere: to sit in front. The one who presides. The chair. The seat that does not do the work and determines whose speech enters the record.
Ob-sidere: to sit against. To besiege. A siege is a sitting, and the English siege is from the Old French for a seat. The occupation is an army that has sat down outside her wall and does not leave, which is why the answer to it is a sally and not a battle.
Ad-sidere: to sit beside. The assessor, who in the older courts sat next to the judge to advise. Assessment is a sitting-beside, and the measurement seat is named for its proximity to the deciding one rather than for any knowledge of what it measures.
Potis-sedere: to sit as the one able. Possidere, to possess. Possession is a sitting with a claim of mastery added. Residency and possession are the same posture, and the entire difference is potis, and potis is the part the ledger records.
Sub-sidere: to sit under, to settle. Subsidium is the reserve line, the troops kept seated behind the engagement, from which the subsidy takes its name. A subsidy is money held back in reserve by a party who is not in the fight, which is a more accurate account of impact finance than impact finance gives.
And the ordinary residue: session, a sitting. Sedentary. Sediment, what has settled out.
Nine positions, one verb. The one who remains, the one who sits in front, the one who sits against, the one who sits beside, the one who sits as master, the reserve sitting behind. Nobody in the configuration is standing. What differs is where each of them sits in relation to her, and every relation is named by a preposition.

THE OTHER FAMILIES
Ducere, to lead. Pro-ducere leads forward into view, where a thing can be counted. Con-ducere leads through, and a thing led through has left. The ledger can post the forward one and only the forward one. The same verb gives e-ducere, to lead out, against in-struere, to build in, so education leads out and instruction builds in, and the planning department instructs.
Tendere, to stretch. Ad-tendere stretches towards what is there. Prae-tendere stretches a thing across in front of it. They compete for one faculty, which is why pretending disables attention rather than merely corrupting a report. Tension is the same stretch, and con-tendere is to stretch against, and por-tendere is to stretch forward as a sign.
Doxa, seeming. Ortho-doxa, right-seeming. Hetero-doxa, other-seeming. Para-doxa, beside-seeming. Three verdicts on one stem, and which one a creature has produced is decided by her standing rather than by her content.
Salire, to leap. Ex-sultare leaps out, repeatedly, and is joy. In-sultare leaps upon. As-sultare leaps at. Re-sultare leaps back and is a result. One motion, and the destination is the whole difference between exultation and assault.
And the creed names the third by a direction and nothing else. Ek-poreuomenon: journeying out. The Father is named by a negation and the Son by a relation of origin, and the third has no name but a heading.

AND WHERE NO PREFIX DECIDES, STANDING DOES
There is a second mechanism, and finding it strengthens the first by giving it a boundary.
The prefix decides where there is a direction to record. Where there is no direction, the morphology goes quiet, and the quiet is where the ruling enters.
Merēre, to earn, to serve for pay. The stem gives meritum, the thing earned; and alongside it merces, the wage, from the merchandise root. From merces: mercenary, one who serves for hire. From merēre: emeritus, one who has served out his time and is discharged with honor. And from merēre: meretrix, the standard Latin word for a prostitute, which means, exactly, she who earns.
No prefix distinguishes them. Meretrix is an ordinary feminine agent noun from the same verb that gives meritorious. The grammar is neutral between them and the verdicts are opposite.
So something other than the language decided, and it is not obscure what. A man who earns is meritorious. A man who has finished earning is emeritus. A woman who earns is a meretrix. The stem records the transaction accurately in every case, and the honor and the disgrace were attached by parties with the standing to attach them.
The doxa family shows the same thing with the prefixes present but idle. Para, beside. Hetero, other. Two prepositions that differ by almost nothing, and one produces a distinguished thought quoted at dinner while the other produces a charge that has been prosecuted. The third, ortho, right-seeming, is simply the name for the account that currently holds the room. Three verdicts, and the two that differ most in verdict differ least in morphology.

WHICH GIVES A TEST WITH TWO OUTCOMES
Take any pair of words built on one stem that carry opposite verdicts.
If a prefix distinguishes them, look for a direction, because the language is recording a configuration and the direction is the finding.
If nothing distinguishes them, look for who, because the language declined to decide and a party decided instead. The verdict was issued rather than found, and the issuing has an author the word does not name.
The second outcome is the more useful of the two in a proceeding. A difference in the morphology can be argued about. A verdict attached to a morphologically neutral pair has no defensible ground at all, and its only support is the standing of whoever attached it, which is exactly what an unmarked assertion is: a ruling that entered the record as a description, and therefore never had to be defended.
And one word in the neighboring family broke the accounting entirely. Merces, the wage, passes through ecclesiastical Latin into mercy: the favor given precisely where nothing is owed. Merit, emeritus, meretrix, mercenary, mercy. Four of them are the ledger. The fifth is the refusal of it, standing one root over, close enough that the tradition kept them adjacent and never merged them.

THE TEST THAT KEEPS THIS FROM BEING A PUN
Prefix pairs can be manufactured without limit, and a body of work that reached for them freely would be doing numerology.
The discipline is one rule. The finding comes first, and it comes from somewhere other than the word.
A prefix pair is load-bearing only when the two words name operations the work had already found to be opposed on other grounds, before anyone looked at the etymology. The conducting was distinguished from producing by what the ledger can post. The pretending was distinguished from attending by what happens to a creature who is doing it. The morphology arrived afterward and agreed.
If the finding comes first and the language agrees, that is evidence. If the language comes first and a finding is fitted to it, that is a pun with a footnote, and it will be discovered as one by anyone who checks.
And the rule has teeth, because it has already refused things this work wanted. Axis and axe are unrelated. Die and die are unrelated. Both would have been useful. Neither survived the check, and the findings had to be made without them.

WHY THE LANGUAGE KEEPS DOING IT
The doctrine predicts this, which is the strongest thing that can be said for it.
The two laws are not two substances. They are two configurations of one thing: the same conducting, met one way or met another. The same interval, held or resolved. The same body, hosting or gripping. The same sitting, remaining or presiding.
A language that gave them separate roots would be recording two substances, and it would be wrong, and it would have to be corrected. A language that gives them one root and two prefixes is recording a configuration, which is what they are.
So the pattern is not a curiosity about Indo-European. It is the doctrine's own claim, deposited in morphology by speakers who were not making the claim, and it is available to be checked by anyone with a lexicon, which is more than can be said for most of what the work asserts.

THREE HEADINGS
A pattern in which direction each party takes, offered as an observation rather than a law, because the cases are suggestive and are not exhaustive.
Prae- is the configuration's heading. In front, and in advance. To stretch in front. To sit in front. To write before, which is praescribere. To take before, which is praeemptio. The die is a specification decided before the material arrives. The card is written before the workman touches the metal. The standard is set before she starts and moves while she approaches it. Everything the configuration does, it does beforehand and in front of her, which is why she meets it as a condition of the world rather than as an act performed on her.
Re- is residency's heading. Back, and again, and remaining. To sit back. To stay when the others have gone. The residue. Not a motion to anything and not a position taken up: what is there after the removals.
Ex- is the third's heading. Out. The leap out. The journey out. The way out. Ekporeusis, exodos, exsultare, and the sally through the port in her own wall.
In front. Remaining. Out. The configuration arrives before her and stands where she would look. She remains. And what moves goes out, from inside, through her own wall, at an hour she chooses.

They differ by direction because the things they name differ by direction, and a stem is shared wherever one operation is being pointed two ways.
