Ordered-Under

To be subordinate is to be ordered-under. Sub-ordinatus: placed in the order, beneath. Not related-to, not beside — ranked below, on the single line the cut installed. The word carries the operation. There is an order, an arranged sequence of higher and lower, and the subordinate is the one assigned the lower rung. To be ordered-under is to have been put in your place on the axis.

THE ORDER

Order is ordo — the rank, the row, the arranged sequence. The order is the axis given a name that makes it sound like cosmos. To order-under is to place on the gradient, beneath. And the placement presents itself as discovery: not we ranked her below, but this is the order of things, the order of creation, her place in the order. The cut wears the costume of cosmos, the ranking wears the costume of nature, and the one ordered-under is told that her position beneath is her role, her calling, her nature.

The forensic is in the word the household codes used. Hupotassō — hupo, under; tassō, to arrange, to set in formation. To arrange-under, to order-under: a term of rank and military formation, set down on the wife, the servant, the lower position, and rendered as submit, as be subject, until the ordering-under read as the order God installed. The arranging-under was an operation with a hand and a date. It was given out as the structure of creation.

ORDERED-UNDER IS LAID-DOWN

To be ordered-under is to be required to be lower, and to be required to be lower is to be required to lie down. The ordered-under and the laid-down are one position seen twice — once as rank, once as posture. To be placed beneath on the order is to be kept low to the surface on which the work is done, available, flat. The order assigns the rung; the body keeps the posture the rung requires.

And the ordered-under is forbidden to presume. To stand is to break formation — read not as standing but as insubordination, the refusal to stay arranged-under. Insubordination is the order's name for the ordered-under rising. The charge defends the order the instant the lower position lifts its head.

NO UNDER

The Law of the Spirit of Life has no under. There is no ordo, no rank, no axis — and so no beneath to be placed under. The prior occupant in her own dwelling is not ordered-under anything. She is not low on a gradient; she is not arranged in a formation; she stands. Ordering-under is a category of the axis, and off the axis it has nothing to place.

What the order calls her insubordination is the prior occupant who was never under — standing where the order's rungs do not reach, in a place the arranging-under could not arrange, because it was hers before the order drew its line.
