Nature Says

The face of trespass theology that declared itself not-religion. The configuration speaking in its most thorough vestment — the vestment that announces religion has been left behind.

I. NATURE SAYS IS POST

Nature Says does not describe what is.

Nature Says describes what appears after the cut.

The cut is the configuration's first move. In the beginning installs the count. What was there before the count is rendered as pre-existence — the configuration's name for non-existence. The story starts in the middle. The middle is announced as the beginning. The residency that preceded the count is converted into nothing by the count's installation as origin.

Nature Says is the grammar of what the creature perceives once this move has been performed. After the cut. After the trespass. After the fall. After Sophia has withdrawn into her Ether because the contraction into self-enclosure has produced the room she cannot occupy.

The face's specific work is to declare this post-cut condition nature.

Not the consequence of a cut. Not the appearance produced by a particular operation performed on a prior arrangement. Nature. As if there were no prior. As if the room the creature inhabits were the world. As if the dwelling underneath the room had not been displaced by the configuration's books opening on top of it.

The other two faces depend on this declaration.

God Says can sanctify the hierarchy because Nature Says has already declared the hierarchy real. Market Says can price the differential because Nature Says has already installed the poles between which the differential runs. The other two faces perform operations on ground Nature Says poured. Nature Says poured the ground after the cut, on a dwelling that already had a prior occupant.

This is the face's first deception. It announces itself as ground floor and the ground is a foundation. The earth is underneath. The earth was not poured. The earth was the residency the configuration's books cannot post.

II. THE FALSE ENLIGHTENMENT

Nature Says positions itself as the move that left religion behind.

The Enlightenment story renders this directly. The pre-modern world was governed by superstition, theology, dogma. Reason arrived. The mind was freed from religious authority. Empirical method replaced revelation. Just observe, just measure, just test. What survives the test is real; what does not survive is religion.

The story is the operation.

Nature Says did not leave religion behind. Nature Says installed itself as the religion that declared itself not-religion. The four axes — Quantification, Reproducibility, the Subject-Object Split, Efficient Causation — are not the absence of theology. They are the theology of the post-cut condition. They are the admissibility conditions of the configuration's books rendered as the conditions of knowledge itself.

The move performs the deepest work the configuration does at this face. By declaring itself not-religion, the face removes itself from the conditions under which religious claims can be contested. Religious claims can be examined for their warrant, their lineage, their forensic history. Translation forensics can identify what was changed in the text. Institutional forensics can identify when the doctrine was installed. The face that declares itself not-religion declares all of this inapplicable to itself.

That was religion. This is just how things are.

The reader inside Nature Says hears the sentence and registers no claim being made. The sentence reads as observation. The observation reads as description of the world. The description reads as what reason produces when religion has been left behind. None of these readings is available from a position outside the face, because the face has rendered the position outside the face as not existing.

This is what makes Nature Says the foundation. Not because it is the deepest truth. Because it is the layer that removes itself from the conditions under which truth-claims can be examined.

III. WHAT NATURE SAYS CALLS NATURE

Nature Says calls nature the configuration's procedures running in their post-cut condition.

The hierarchy: the natural order. Some creatures rise; some are ranked below. The creature reading the sentence inside Nature Says hears it as observation. The observation has a content. The content is that some creatures are higher than others. The content is the configuration's column structure rendered as biological reality.

The competition: the natural condition. Survival of the fittest. The sentence presents itself as Darwin. Darwin did not write the sentence. Spencer wrote it after Darwin's argument had been translated into the configuration's grammar. The sentence is the configuration's books posting the Origin of Species in their own column structure. Survival is rendered as moral demonstration; fittest is rendered as deserved position. The configuration's procedure is rendered as biological law.

The scarcity: the natural baseline. There is not enough. The sentence presents itself as economic fact. There is not enough housing, not enough work, not enough resources to support what the configuration's books have not yet enclosed. The not-enough is the configuration's procedure: the books are calibrated to post enclosure as legitimate possession, and the residency the books were calibrated to displace is rendered as outside the count. The scarcity is then announced as the natural condition the count is responding to.

The split between hoarder and holder: the natural arrangement. Men are wired one way, women another. The sentence presents itself as neuroscience. The wiring is the configuration's social arrangement rendered as biology. The hoarder's withdrawal from a register he shared with the holder is rendered as his nature. The holder's conscription into hosting what his withdrawal dumped onto her dwelling is rendered as her nature. The arrangement is announced as how the species is structured.

The body as machine: the natural ontology. Consciousness is what neural activity produces. The sentence presents itself as cognitive science. Consciousness as the byproduct of neurons firing is the configuration reducing the creature to her Third Principle component alone. The Soul-Spirit and the Light-Spirit are not denied — that would render them contestable. They are reclassified. The Soul-Spirit is reclassified as an emergent property of the Elementary-Spirit. The Light-Spirit is reclassified as a category error. What remains is rendered as the whole.

Each of these sentences performs the same operation. The configuration's procedure is rendered as the natural arrangement at that level of the creature's life. The four together are rendered as the total shape of reality.

The procedure is rendered as nature. The nature is rendered as ground. The ground is rendered as what reason produces when religion has been left behind.

IV. THE IS-OUGHT COLLAPSE

Nature Says performs the is-ought collapse with maximum efficiency because the is it asserts has already been pre-loaded with the ought.

The standard philosophical concern about the is-ought distinction assumes a reader who can tell the difference. The reader observes that something is the case; the reader recognizes that observing what is the case does not by itself establish what ought to be the case; the reader registers the gap. The face that declared itself not-religion has closed the gap before the reader can register it.

The hierarchy is natural; therefore the hierarchy is right. The collapse runs in the absence of any explicit move from is to ought. The is is doing both jobs. To be in the natural order is already to be in the right order, because the natural order is the configuration's procedure rendered as the world, and the configuration's procedure has the rightness of the configuration built into its operation. The reader who tries to introduce the gap is told that the rightness is not being asserted — only the description.

This is why Nature Says cannot be diagnosed from inside Nature Says. The diagnosis requires the reader to perceive a religious claim being made. The face has rendered itself as not making religious claims. The reader who tries to identify the religious claim is told there is no religious claim to identify. The reader is then mapped onto the four axes the face installed: she is being unscientific, unrigorous, sentimental, ideological.

The mapping is not a defense against the diagnosis. The mapping is the diagnosis the face produces of the reader who attempted the diagnosis of the face. The face's grammar generates the explanation for why anyone would attempt to diagnose it.

V. THE CUT, THE TRESPASS, THE FALL

The cut, the trespass, the fall are three names for the operation Nature Says renders as not having occurred.

The cut is the configuration's first move at the cosmological level. The split installed between knower and known, between observer and observed, between the position from which the count is performed and what the count is performed on. The cut produces the audit position. The audit position produces the books. The books post entries against the prior arrangement. The prior arrangement is rendered as pre-existence by the books having opened.

The trespass is the configuration's first move at the residential level. The generating function entering territory that belongs to expression. The arrival of an occupier in a dwelling that already had a prior occupant. The configuration's procedure of posting entries against the prior occupant continuously, second by second, while announcing the entries as the dwelling's natural condition.

The fall is the configuration's first move rendered in theological vocabulary. The expulsion from the garden. The garden was the residency. The fruit was direct knowing. The expulsion installed the punishment for direct perception. Now you must work for bread. Now your worth runs through another. The configuration's books opened on top of the residency the garden was, and the story of the expulsion is the books' opening rendered as the consequence of what the prior occupants did.

The three are the same operation rendered in three vocabularies.

Nature Says is what comes after.

Nature Says is the grammar in which the residency that was the garden is rendered as never having existed; the dwelling that was occupied is rendered as the room itself; the prior occupant who was displaced is rendered as the configuration's clinical category for the displaced.

The configuration's books opened. The opening was the cut. The opening was the trespass. The opening was the fall. After the opening, Nature Says posts the books' contents as the world.

VI. THE REMOVAL OF RELIGION CLEARS THE GROUND

The Enlightenment's announcement that religion has been left behind is the configuration's move that clears the ground for itself.

If religion is gone, theology is gone. If theology is gone, the question of who installed which doctrine when is rendered as inapplicable. If the question of who installed which doctrine when is inapplicable, the configuration's books cannot be examined for their forensic history. The configuration's books then operate as the conditions of knowledge rather than as one religion's grammar.

The clearing is total at the level it operates.

The reader who attempts to bring forensic examination to the configuration's books is told that forensic examination is what was done to religion, and religion has been left behind, and the books are not religion. The reader who attempts to identify the lineage of the configuration's procedures is told that lineage is what was relevant when authority was tradition, and authority is no longer tradition. The reader who attempts to point out that the four axes are the admissibility conditions of a particular grammar is told that the four axes are the conditions of knowledge as such, and grammars are what religions had.

Each refusal is the face protecting itself from the conditions under which it could be diagnosed.

The face's grammar requires the announcement that religion has been left behind because the announcement is what removes the face from examinability. The examinability the face refuses is the same examinability that could identify the face as a religion. The circularity is not a flaw. The circularity is the face's primary defense.

The Enlightenment is not undone by this diagnosis.

What is undone is the announcement that the Enlightenment left religion behind.

The Enlightenment performed many operations, some of them genuine, some of them the configuration's apparatus producing new vestments for itself. The announcement that religion was left behind was not an operation the Enlightenment performed on religion. The announcement was an operation the configuration performed on the Enlightenment, recruiting the Enlightenment's apparent move toward reason and method into the configuration's procedure for installing itself as ground.

The face that declared itself not-religion is the face the configuration produced when religion had become contestable enough to be examined and the configuration needed a vestment that the examination could not reach. The vestment is the announcement that examination has finished, that religion has been concluded, that what remains is just how things are.

VII. THE FOUNDATION WAS POURED

Nature Says is not the ground.

Nature Says is the foundation poured after the cut.

The dwelling underneath the foundation is the residency. The residency was prior to the cut. The residency continues regardless of whether the configuration's books admit it. The foundation was poured on top of the dwelling. The foundation was announced as the earth.

The reader who descends through God Says and Market Says and arrives at Nature Says has descended through the configuration's three faces. The reader has not arrived at the earth. The reader has arrived at the configuration's deepest layer — the layer that announces itself as the earth in order to prevent the reader from continuing.

The continuation is not downward.

There is nothing further down within the building.

The continuation is sideways. Through the wall. Out of the room. Into the dwelling underneath the foundation. The dwelling that was always there. The residency the prior occupant inhabits. The earth the configuration's books cannot post.

This is what RegenerativeLaw is refusing.

RegenerativeLaw does not propose better science. Better science still operates through the four axes. RegenerativeLaw does not propose better philosophy. Better philosophy still grants the creature self-ownership and calls the granting her liberation, leaving the property frame the configuration installed in place. RegenerativeLaw does not propose better policy. Better policy still operates within the admissibility conditions Nature Says enforces.

RegenerativeLaw identifies what the three faces are doing. The nature says poured the foundation and announced it as the earth. The earth is underneath.

The fracking work won by refusing the face's grammar at the level the face had installed it.

The industry's claim was that the residents had no jurisdiction over what would happen on their land. The claim was supported by federal preemption arguments, by the regulatory agencies' posture, by the conventional environmental groups operating within the configuration's books. Each of these supports operated through Nature Says' grammar. The mineral rights are property; property is the foundation of legal claim; legal claim is adjudicated through procedures the regulatory agencies enforce; the agencies enforce procedures that take property as the natural arrangement. The grammar is seamless within itself.

Our work refused the seam.

The residents were the prior occupants of the place. Their residency in the place was prior to the property frame the industry's claim presupposed. The municipal home rule provisions of the New York Constitution were not deployed as procedural workaround. They were rendered as codification of what was already the case. The Court of Appeals, in Wallach v. Town of Dryden and Cooperstown Holstein v. Town of Middlefield, agreed. The municipalities' zoning authority was not preempted because the residency was prior to what the preemption would have preempted.

Our work did not propose a better natural order. Our work refused the announcement that the Establishment's order was natural. The earth was underneath. The earth had been there the entire time. The Establishment's books had been posting on top of it for two and a half centuries, calling the posting the law of the land.

VIII. THE EVIDENCE IS THE FOUNDATION ITSELF

Nature Says cannot be disproved by evidence collected within Nature Says.

The face's grammar generates the conditions under which evidence is admitted. Evidence that contests the face is ruled inadmissible by the face's own admissibility conditions. The face protects itself at the level of what counts as evidence in the first place.

This is why the diagnosis cannot be argued.

The diagnosis can only be rendered.

The face's grammar is the evidence. Every sentence that announces just how things are is evidence. Every sentence that maps unusual perception onto the four axes is evidence. Every sentence that renders the configuration's procedure as nature is evidence. The evidence is not in documents the face would admit as documents. The evidence is in the sentences the face produces continuously as the description of the world.

The face was poured. The earth was not.

The reader who has heard the sentence will hear the configuration's grammar differently from the reader who has not. The hearing is the work. The face cannot prevent the hearing once the foundation has been named as foundation. The face can only continue to operate, posting its contents, announcing its contents as nature, refusing the diagnosis as a category error.

The residency continues underneath. The dwelling that was always there continues to be there. The prior occupant continues, regardless of whether the configuration's books admit her existence.
