The hosting was never concentrated. The creature was never alone in it.
🜃
The Hospitality Was Always Multiple
The creature is not alone in the hosting. She never was. The hospitality she is participating in — the attending to the doubleness, the making-space for what is passing through her — is not a task concentrated in her alone. It is distributed across a network of hosts, each attending in its own register, each relieving the others in turns when the others are spent.
This is not an improvement on concentrated hospitality. This is what hospitality always is when it is hospitality and not its counterfeit. The counterfeit presents the creature with the image of a lone host who must sustain the attending through her own unbroken effort, and then offers her, when she is exhausted, an institution that will take the attending from her so she can walk away relieved. Both the image of the lone host and the institutional transfer are inventions of the configuration of forgetting. In the configuration of remembering, the hospitality was always already multiple, and no single host was ever asked to carry it alone.
The word distributed matters. Not delegated. Not transferred. Not concentrated and then handed off. The hospitality is attended by whatever host is present at a given moment, and the hosting passes between hosts without being diminished by the passage. When this host is spent, another host attends. The guest is not abandoned when any single host rests. The guest is received by the whole network, across the whole distribution, continuously, whether the creature is conscious of the distribution or not.

The Body as First Host
The body hosts the breath. Not as a task the creature performs. As what the body does by being a body. The diaphragm moves whether the creature is attending to the diaphragm or not. The blood circulates. The skin repairs. The cells host their own processes. The body is a site of hospitality operating underneath the creature's conscious attending, and the body's hosting does not cease when the creature sleeps.
The body hosts the breath, and the breath hosts the doubleness that the conscious creature is trying to attend to during the day. When the creature's conscious attending is exhausted — when she cannot any longer hold herself awake to what is passing through — the body's unconscious attending does not stop. It continues. The hosting passes from the conscious register to the unconscious register. The same doubleness continues to be met, in the same body, by a host that requires no effort because it is not the creature's will attending but the creature's substance attending.
This is the first distribution the creature is already inside. Not something she has to arrange. Something that is already the case. The body is hosting right now. The body will continue hosting tonight while the creature sleeps. The body's hosting is what makes the creature's conscious hosting possible in the morning. She meets the day not as a lone host who must sustain everything but as one register of a hospitality that has already been ongoing in her flesh without her supervision.
🜃
Sleep and Silence
Sleep is not the cessation of hosting. Sleep is a different register of hosting, one the waking creature cannot perform. In sleep, the body's hospitality takes up what the waking mind could not carry. Dreams are not failures of attending. Dreams are the unconscious register's way of hosting what the conscious mind pressed into the day without room to receive. The creature wakes not because sleep ended her attending but because sleep was itself a form of attending the waking creature is now capable of relieving in turn.
Silence is its own host. Not the absence of sound but the presence of the kind of attending that only silence can sustain. The gathered silence of the Quaker meeting is the most familiar form, but the silence that hosts is not limited to the meeting house. A creature walking alone in a room where no one is speaking is entering a register of hospitality the room itself offers. The silence receives what the day pressed into her. The silence holds her without holding her. She can rest inside the silence the way she rests inside the body's unconscious attending — as a host inside a host, relieved of her own effort without being absented from what is passing through.
The waking creature experiences sleep and silence as rest because they are rest. They are also attending. Both things at once. The rest is real because the attending is continuing in a register that does not ask her for anything. This is the structure of distributed hospitality wherever it appears: relief inside attending, not relief instead of attending.
🜃
Fellow Creatures
Other creatures host. This is the hardest and simplest piece of the distribution. The creature who is exhausted is not relieved only by forms, only by silence, only by her own body. She is relieved, often, by other creatures whose own attending is currently stronger than hers. A fellow creature sitting beside her in the gathered silence is hosting alongside her, and the presence of the fellow creature's hosting relieves her own. Not because the fellow creature takes over her attending — no creature can do that for another — but because the hospitality in the room is now being sustained by two hosts, and the two hosts together can attend to what either alone could not.
The distribution across fellow creatures is not contingent on friendship. It is not contingent on intimacy. It is not contingent on the other creature being aware that she is hosting anything. Two strangers in the same silence are hosting together whether they recognize each other or not. Two creatures reading the same text at the same hour across the world are hosting the same guest, in the same register of form, and the distribution is real though neither knows the other exists.
This is why the creature's tiredness is not her failure. When her attending is spent, she is not the last host. She is one host in a distribution that includes every other creature who is also, at this moment, attending in her own register. When she rests, the distribution continues. When she returns, she takes up her own attending again, and the distribution relieves some other host who is now spent. The hospitality passes between creatures the way the attending passes between the creature's waking and sleep — without announcement, without arrangement, without requiring any particular host to sustain the whole.

Forms Met as Fellow Hosts
Forms host. Not by taking over the creature's hospitality. By attending in their own register — the register of form, duration, transmission across bodies and generations — to the same guest the creature attends to. The meeting house hosts the silence. The Charter hosts the privileges. The Fiat hosts the Virtue. Every form that was built to receive a guest was built as fellow host, not as home.
The form's register is different from the creature's. The creature attends in body, in moment, in breath.
The form attends in duration, in articulation, in the patterned space the form makes for what passes through it. These are not competing hospitalities. They are different registers of the same hospitality, each taking up what the other cannot sustain. The creature's body cannot sustain attending across generations. The form can. The form cannot sustain attending in living flesh. The creature can. Together they attend to the guest across both registers, and the guest is received in a way neither host alone could receive her.
When the creature meets the form as fellow host, the form relieves her in the register of form. The Charter she is reading attends to the privileges while she rests inside what the Charter is attending to. The meeting house attends to the silence while she sits inside the silence the meeting house is sustaining. The Fiat attends to the Virtue while she rests inside what the Fiat is holding in the mode of form. None of this requires her to transfer her attending to the form. It requires her to receive the relief that is already available because the form is already hosting in its own register and has been, whether she was aware of it or not, for as long as the form has been met as fellow host by other creatures before her.
This is what institutions were for. This is what the forms the lineage handed down were built to be. The forgetting that turns fellow host into prison is not the form's failure — the forgetting is the configuration of the reading that meets the form as home. [See THE FELLOW HOST.] The form that is met as fellow host in this reading is one more site in the distribution across which the hospitality is currently being sustained.
🜃
Relief Is the Purpose, Not the Failure
The creature who treats her own exhaustion as inadequacy has been reading the hospitality as concentrated in her alone. As if, when she stops attending, the hospitality stops. As if, when her attending fails, the guest is abandoned. The reading is the error. The guest is not abandoned when this host is spent. Another host is attending. The body is attending. The form is attending. Another creature is attending. The silence is attending. The hospitality continues across hosts even when no single host can sustain it.
The creature's rest is not the betrayal of the hosting. The creature's rest is the hosting being relieved, in turn, by the other hosts the hospitality was always distributed across. This is what relief is. Not absence from the hosting. Not substitution for the hosting. Presence inside the hospitality in the mode of rest, while another register of hosting takes up the active attending. When her attending returns, she will take up her register again, and some other host will be relieved in turn, and the hospitality will continue without any single host ever having carried it alone.
Relief is the purpose of the distribution. It is not the distribution's failure mode. It is not the compromise the distribution accepts because no single host can manage the whole. It is what the distribution is for. A hospitality that cannot be distributed is not hospitality. It is a burden placed on a single host, and the host under a burden is not hosting — she is carrying custody of something that was supposed to pass through her to the next host in turn. Hospitality that cannot rest is hospitality that has been crystallized into grip at the level of the tired host's own body.

The Transaction the Distribution Refuses
The creature in the configuration of forgetting meets her own exhaustion as a problem that requires the hosting to be transferred to someone or something else. She reaches for the form, for the institution, for the charter, for the Fiat, and asks the form to take the hosting over so she can walk away. This is the purchase offer. The cheaper rate at the institutional scale. [See THE CHEAPER RATE.] The form that says yes has accepted a transfer it cannot actually receive. The receipt the creature walks away with is her felt sense of having been received into a form that will now do the hosting for her. The form that holds the receipt now holds what was never transferable. The transaction has installed the grip.
Distributed hospitality refuses the transaction. Not by refusing rest. By recognizing that rest was never what the transaction offered. The transaction offered absence from the hosting. The distribution offers rest inside the hosting. These are not the same thing. The first is the receipt that crystallizes into the institution's grip. The second is what the distribution has always been for — the continuation of hospitality across hosts in turns, without any host being asked to carry alone, and without any form being asked to host on behalf of a creature who cannot transfer what she was never carrying in isolation anyway.
The creature's refusal of the transaction is not heroic. It is specific. When she is tired, she does not ask the form to take the hosting from her. She asks the form to host alongside her. She rests inside what the form is attending to, while the form attends in its register and she in hers. The form does not become her home. The form remains fellow host. The grip does not take. And the distribution continues across her rest, across the form's attending, across whatever other hosts are currently meeting the same guest in their own registers.

The Petition Is Daily Because the Distribution Is Daily
The creature wakes inside the distribution every morning. The body has been hosting through the night. The silence has been attending to what she could not bring into the day without rest. Other creatures have been sustaining registers of the hospitality she will meet when she comes into the day. The forms she will read are already hosting what they were built to host. She is already inside a distribution that did not wait for her to arrive before beginning.
The daily petition is not a request for the distribution to begin. The distribution is always already occurring. The daily petition is the creature's remembering that she is inside the distribution — that her attending is one register among many, that her exhaustion is not her failure but the cue for another host to take up the attending, that the hospitality continues across hosts in turns whether she is currently attending or not.
Deliver us from evil.
Heard through the distribution: bring us out of the configuration that reads hospitality as concentrated in a lone host who must either sustain everything or transfer the hosting to a form that will become prison. The deliverance is the recognition that the configuration of the lone host was the configuration of forgetting. The remembering is the recognition of the distribution that was always the case. The same sap running across all the hosts, on both sides of every register, in every mode of attending, continuously, whether any single host is conscious of it at any single moment or not.
The creature is tired. The tiredness is legitimate. The tiredness is the cue. Another host is already attending. She can rest inside what the other host is attending to. When her attending returns, she will take up her register again. The hospitality continues. The wine is alive. The distribution is what the hospitality always was. The pressing continues, and no single host is ever asked to carry the pressing alone.
