The capture that does not accuse you of doing wrong. It tells you what you are and gets it wrong, and it gets it wrong so completely that the error becomes the ground you stand on. Böhme's account of the Fall, read as a description of an operation still running.

I. THE PRIMARY DECEPTION
We should be so continually cheated and befooled by the Devil, to think that we are not the Children of God, nor of his Essence.
Not that you broke a rule. Not that you owe a debt. Not that you crossed where you should not have crossed. That you are not what you are.
The tollbooth stationed at the threshold does not say you may not pass. It says you are not the kind of being that passes, that passage belongs to those of divine Essence, and that you are something else.
The charge is never about the deed, because a charge about a deed can be answered, and a verdict on what you are cannot.

II. THE MECHANISM, IN FOUR MOVES
He continually puts the monstrous Shape or Form into our Thoughts, as he did into our Mother Eve, which she gazed too much upon, and by her representing it in her Imagination, she became a Child of this World.
Four operations, in order, each requiring the one before it.
The Devil puts. The Shape is offered and not forced. Showing, representation, false persuading: derivative light showing what derivative light can show, and insisting that what it shows is all there is.
Eve gazes. Attention turns towards what was offered. Not a glance. Gazing, lingering, beholding. The attention does nothing yet, and it makes the next move possible.
Eve represents it in Imagination. Here the operation completes. What was offered from outside is reproduced within. She does not merely see the Shape. She remakes it inside herself.
Eve becomes what she represented, wholly naked and vain, and void of Understanding.
So the capture cannot impose itself and must be taken up, which is why the tollbooth needs compliance and why the measurement cut only succeeds when the creature performs it on itself.
Böhme presses this further on Adam: the Shape was one which he had made to himself by his Imagination and Lust, by the Devil's Representation, and false Persuading. The Devil offered. Adam made. Made to himself.

III. WHAT THE SHAPE PRODUCES
Shame first. He would bring us into another Image, as he did Eve, that we might be ashamed to appear in the Presence of the Light.
Not that you did wrong and should be punished. That you are wrong and cannot appear. The shame does not follow the deed; the shame is the Shape working, producing the felt certainty that you cannot be seen where Light shines.
Then nakedness. I am naked, and am afraid; which was nothing else, but that his Belief and Knowledge of the Holy God was put out. The nakedness is not the body exposed. It is the knowing extinguished. What Adam knew before, that he was of God's Essence and could stand at the Center, was put out. The Shape did not wound his being. It put out his knowing of his being.
And then hiding. When they hid themselves behind the Trees, that is, behind the monstrous Shape or Form. They hide behind the very thing that deformed them. What separated them from Light becomes their covering from Light, and the deformation becomes the shelter.

IV. THE SELF-EVIDENCE TRAP
He conceived that he was now but a mere Child of this World, when he beheld his Corruptibility, and also the monstrous Image which he was in.
Adam looks at himself, sees corruptibility and the Image he now carries, and concludes that he is only this. The evidence looks undeniable, because he can in fact see his corruptibility and does in fact carry the Image.
The conclusion does not follow. Corruptibility does not prove non-divinity, and carrying the Image does not prove you are only the Image. Look at yourself means look through the instrument the Shape installed, which shows what it shows and then offers its own showing as proof, so the self-evidence is the swindle rather than a check on it.
The Shape works through derivative light, which illuminates form, matter, mortality, and cannot show eternal Light at all. Then it says: look, no Light. It is looking through darkness, and darkness cannot comprehend Light. What it fails to see proves nothing about what is there.

V. THE THREE LIES
He would have thought that he was wholly departed, or quite separated from the eternal divine Birth, and that he was no more in God, nor God any more in him, and that he was no more of God's Essence.
Three beliefs, and if all three took complete hold the capture would be finished.
I am no more in God. Separation from source: the creature that does not know whose creature it is. Not the coming-from lost, but the knowing of the coming-from.
God is no more in me. The Center declared vacant. Not vacant in fact, declared vacant by the Shape's showing, because the Shape cannot perceive the Center and turns its own blindness into a finding of absence.
I am no more of God's Essence. Identity severed. Not distant from God but not of God's substance. This is the difference between a figure like God, a copy, and something generated of God, an offspring of the same Essence.
All three together are what past Recovery means, and the claim is not that recovery would be hard but that there is nothing left to recover.

VI. IT SHOWS DAILY
The Devil also continually represented his Corruptibility and Mortality to him.
Continually. The Shape does not show once and withdraw. It shows in every mirror, every failure, every reminder of limitation, and the evidence keeps arriving because the evidence is real. The Shape needs no new material, because it only has to keep presenting what the creature can already perceive and keep insisting that this is the whole of what there is.
And himself could see nothing else. Adam was driven from Paradise not in the sense of losing what Paradise is, but of losing conscious access to where God shines. He lived no more merely by the Word of God, but did eat and drink, viz. the Birth of his Life henceforward consisted in the Kingdom of the Stars and Elements.
The point is not that derivative light is evil or the third Principle wrong. It is that perception has been compressed to one Principle and that Principle declared to be everything.

VII. THE TRANSLATION
When he saw and knew by that which God had told him, that he should die and perish, if he did eat of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, it made him continually imagine that he was now no more the Child of God.
What God said was conditional, about an action, about a consequence. If you eat, you will die.
What Adam heard was categorical, about identity, about essence. You are no more God's child.
Nothing was added. The lie was manufactured out of true material by running it through a grammar that converts event into essence, so the Shape is not what was invented but what the translation produced.

VIII. THE SHAPE YOU WERE BORN INTO
The Source of all the three Principles does imprint itself together with the Child's Incarnation, in the Mother's Body.
The Shape preceded you. Before you could consent or resist, three Images stood in the womb: the Image of God, the Image of this World, and the Image of the Devil. Not acquired in sequence. Standing.
Now there must be Wrestling and Overcoming, and there is Need of the Treader upon the Serpent, even in the Mother's Body.
The wrestling starts before birth and does not wait for anyone to grow up and choose. The Fiat itself carries the infection: the figuring-capacity meant to produce beings in God's Image now produces creatures shaped by what was already introduced, and the similitude-function meant to make beings who would eat of the Word now makes beings who cannot perceive the Word being offered.
The Shape a creature carries is older than the creature, which is not an excuse and is a geometry: the laying-off is not the correction of your error but the release of what was transmitted before you could receive or refuse it.

IX. WHAT THE SHAPE CANNOT TOUCH
Your monstrous Form or Shape indeed is not God, nor of his Essence, or Substance, but the hidden Man, which is the Soul, is the proper Essence of God.
Two things hold at once. The monstrous Form is real and you carry it and it is not God. The hidden Man is real and you are it and it is God's proper Essence.
The swindle is to make you identify with the first only. The Shape cannot perceive the hidden Man, and it presents that incapacity as a finding about what is there.
For as much as the Love in the Light of God is sprung up in your own Center, out of which the Holy Ghost proceeds. Not that the Love will spring up if you qualify, or can spring up if you earn it. It is sprung up, already, in your own Center. Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot comprehend it, and the darkness also cannot exclude it.

X. WHERE ART THOU
When the Lord appeared in the Center of the Birth of their Lives, and said, Where art thou, Adam?
God does not appear from outside to judge. God appears at the Center, in the place where Fire rises and transformation happens, in the heart of their own lives.
The question is not an accusation. It is a position fix. I appear where you should be standing, and you are not here. Adam had been driven from the Center into hiding behind the Trees, and God does not follow him to the hiding place; God appears where Adam belongs and asks where Adam went.
Not what have you done, but where are you, because the eating is not the problem and the hiding is, and displacement is what the first question addresses.

XI. THE TREADER
Thereupon the Lord showed him the Treader upon the Serpent, who should destroy his monstrous Birth.
Not destroy Adam. Destroy the monstrous Birth, the thing made through imagination that told Adam he was other than God's child.
The Treader does not meet the Serpent with opposing force. The Treader treads: walks upon, passes over, uses as ground what claimed to be the obstacle. The Serpent stationed at the gate becomes terrain, and the tollbooth becomes floor.
From the monstrous Birth be regenerated anew, in the Shape, Form, Power and Virtue of the Treader upon the Serpent.
Regenerated anew, which is not restoration. Adam is not returned to Eden. He becomes one who treads upon serpents, and pre-Fall innocence could never have held that capacity. What replaces the monstrous Birth is not what preceded it, so the crossing produces a capacity that could not have existed before the crossing.
And the Virtue operates in Spite of all the Gates of the Wrathfulness, wherein the Devil lives. In spite of. The Gates are not destroyed and are not opened. They remain, and the Devil still lives there, and the regenerated creature passes anyway. The tollbooth still stands. The toll no longer applies.

XII. THE SHAPE AND THE LEDGER ARE ONE REFUSAL
The Shape converts event into essence: action into identity, what happened into what you are. It takes the conditional, if you eat you will die, and returns the categorical, you are no more God's child.
The Ledger converts gift into debt: nourishment into obligation, what was given into what you owe. It takes the unconditional, that which gives itself forth to be Food to all the Qualities, with a hearty Affection, and returns the transactional, after everything I have done for you.
The Shape makes you believe you are not what you are, and the Ledger makes you believe you owe what you never borrowed, and both need your participation, and both present themselves as merely looking at the evidence.
Neither arrived from outside the creature. The generating function was invited to sink down as if dead and soft, and refused. The Shape is that refusal projected outward as a verdict on what you are. The Ledger is the same refusal projected outward as an economy. The impotence is not the condition the refusal happened under. It is what the refusal produced. It neutered itself before it neutered anything else.
And the refusal is happening now, in this body, today, which is also the only reason it can stop.

XIII. WHY WILL YOU
Do but look upon yourself, why have you earthly Thoughts of yourself? Why will you be mocked by the Devil, and be fooled by the World, so as to be led to think that you are but a Kind of Figure like God, and not generated or begotten of God?
Why will you. Not why do you, as though it were involuntary. The verb says the Shape is maintained rather than suffered, and something maintained daily can be stopped.
The lie it maintains is precise: that you are a figure like God rather than generated of God. Copy, not offspring. Made in the image, not begotten from the substrate.
And the question does not argue with it. It asks, with something closer to perplexity, why you will go on doing the gazing and the representing and the becoming, when the Oil is already inside and the Love is already sprung up in your own Center.
How then should you not have Power and Authority to speak of God, who is your Father, of whose Essence you are?
The Shape says you need mediation, credential, the tollbooth.
The question says: why will you be fooled.
