The Old Paths

Jeremiah 6:16. The instruction begins with stopping, the paths are asked for rather than built, the rest is free, and the verse ends with the offer refused.

🜃

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

Read the sequence rather than the sentiment. The first instruction is to halt. The second is to look. The third is to ask, not to devise. The fourth names what is asked for as already existing and already good. The fifth is to walk it. The sixth states what walking it yields, and what it yields is rest.

And the seventh clause is the one the verse turns on, and it is almost never quoted with the rest: they said they would not.

IT IS NOT A GOLDEN AGE

The verse is quoted constantly by restorationists, and the misreading is available in the first three words.

Old here is not a period. Nothing in the passage identifies a former time that was better and should be returned to, and no golden age is described, dated or mourned. What is old is the path, in the sense of prior: it was there before the walkers arrived, it is there now, and it will be there when they have gone. The paths are not old the way a memory is old. They are old the way ground is old.

Which is the whole distinction between a restoration and a cessation. A restoration proposes to rebuild something that was lost, which requires construction, a plan, a party to run it, and a claim about when things were right. Standing in the way and asking requires none of that, because the thing asked after never stopped being where it is.

THE FIRST INSTRUCTION IS TO STOP

Stand ye in the ways. Before seeing, before asking, before walking. Halt where you are.

Every captured position begins from the other question, which is what to do next, and the answer to that question is spent on the maintenance of what is already running. The verse does not answer it. It arrests it, and only then does anything else become available: the seeing comes after the standing, and the asking after the seeing, and nothing in the sequence can be reached by moving faster.

A creature in motion cannot look at the way she is on, because looking requires that the motion stop, and the motion is what is producing the position she would be looking at.

ASK, DO NOT BUILD

The instruction is to ask for the paths, which presupposes parties who know where they are, and this is the part the reformist register cannot accommodate.

There is nothing to design here. No method is produced, no theory of change, no program with stages. What is asked for is directions to something that exists, from someone who has been there, and the asking concedes that the asker did not make it and does not own it.

Which is also why the verse has no vendor in it. A path that must be built has a builder, and a builder has a fee, a timeline, and a reason for the path to remain incomplete. A path that is asked after has none of those, because the party who tells you where it runs has nothing to sell you and cannot charge for the walking.

THE REST IS THE YIELD AND IT IS NOT EARNED

Ye shall find rest for your souls. Not achieve, not attain, not be granted. Find, which is what happens to a thing that was already lying there.

The rest promised is not recovery in service of the next exertion, and it is not a reward at the end of a sequence of correct actions. It is what walking the path yields, in the way that walking downhill yields descent. Nothing has to be added to the walking to produce it and nothing is charged for it.

Which makes the verse's arithmetic exact: the path costs nothing, the asking costs nothing, and the rest arrives without being purchased. The whole offer is free at every point, and an offer free at every point is the mark the second law leaves.

AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT

The verse ends on a refusal, and the refusal is what makes it evidence rather than encouragement.

Everything before the last clause establishes that the alternative was available, identified, walkable and free. The last clause records that it was declined anyway. Not that it could not be found, not that it was too costly, not that the conditions were unfavourable. They looked at it and said no.

Which is the strongest form of the claim that the configuration is chosen rather than inevitable, and the verse supplies it with no theory attached. The path was there and the rest was free and they would not walk it, and every account which holds that there was no alternative has to get past a sentence in which the alternative is described and turned down.

🜃

The passage is treated as a call to return and it is not one. There is nothing to return to, no era named, no restoration proposed.

There is a standing still, a looking, an asking after something that never went anywhere, a walking, a rest that is found rather than earned, and a recorded refusal of all of it by people who had been shown exactly where it ran.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

RegenerativeLaw

The prime question is not what do we do next.

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for.

The prime question is what do we stop doing.

Lobster trap

The response that arrives most often is yes, and also this. Add it to the program, fund it, give it a metric. That is not agreement arriving late. It is the claim converted into one more thing being done.
