Leer X Radiance

THE LEER AND THE RADIANCE

The Same Field Meets the War Body as Threat and the Host as Reception — One Gaze, Two Configurations

🜃

The world gazing back reads as a leer only from inside the occupied configuration.

The war body meets the field as threat.

This is the doubleness of the meeting, and it is not the doubleness of the world: the same field is met in two configurations, and the leer is not the field's own face but the field as the contracted one receives it.

Same field. Same act of meeting. Two configurations, and the difference between them is the whole of it.

THE WAR BODY'S READING

The war body is the natural body with its qualities turned inward, contracted against motion, closed on itself. It can meet the field only as menace, because it meets everything from behind a guard. The predatory reading is the field seen through contraction.

The attending that meets the field armed can attend only to threat; it was built to.

The leer is not information about the world. It is the war body's own configuration returned to it as the world's face.  see THE WAR-BODY

THE COLLAPSE MISTAKEN FOR ALL THAT IS

From inside single vision — the doubleness collapsed to one, the Switch performed on perception — the leer is not experienced as a configuration.

It is experienced as reality. see THE SWITCH

The collapse cannot perceive that its threat-reading is a reading; it calls the leer seeing clearly, waking up, the world as it really is.

This is where the prized practice of sense-making lives: the surveyor over-stands the field, reports the leer, and calls the report accuracy. see SENSE-MAKING  THE SURVEYOR. The mistaking is airtight, because the only instrument the collapse trusts to check reality is the same surveying that produced the leer. It mistakes itself for all that is, and audits the mistake with the mistake. see AUDIT POSITION

WHY THE CROSSING IS NOT MORE SENSE-MAKING

Reception is not a better reading, not sharper attention, not a more careful survey.

It is kenosis — the emptying of the one who surveys.

You cannot over-stand [over-step/trespass] your way to the emptying of the over-stander, because the surveying is the un-emptied self, and the prized sense-making is that self operating. A grip does not become hosting by gripping more precisely. The war body does not arrive at reception by reading the field more carefully; it arrives only by ceasing to be armed, and ceasing to be armed is the one move reading cannot perform. see SENSE-MAKING · THE YIELDING This is why sense-making cannot get there. Not because it is careless. Because it is the collapse operating, and the crossing is the end of the collapse.

THE RADIANCE

The remembering-configuration is the same act of meeting, from an unarmed body.

When the war body's qualities turn back outward — the contraction against motion released, the surveyor stepped down out of the seat above and into the field, the creature resident in what she meets rather than over it — the field that leered is received as radiance.

This is kenosis, hosting, reception. It is Sophia: receptive radiance, the mirror-capacity that receives and returns without distortion.

She withdraws when imagination contracts into self-enclosure; she cannot occupy the space where it has contracted; she was never absent, only imperceptible from within the collapse.

When imagination reopens, she returns, and the field that was a predator is a guest. The world gazing back, received rather than surveyed, is not a leer.

It is the reciprocal seeing, the gaze that returns what it is given without distortion. Same gaze. Same sap. The leer and the radiance are one field met in two configurations.

🜃

From inside the collapse the radiance is not merely absent. It is inconceivable.

The war body cannot imagine that the field it meets as threat could be received as radiance, because imagining it would require the emptying the war body is contracted against — and so the collapse defends its leer as realism, names reception naïveté, and grows more certain it sees clearly the more the field bares its teeth.

The crossing cannot be made by trying, because trying is the surveyor surveying harder, the war body gripping the field to force it to yield its radiance — and the field, gripped, leers. What the collapse calls the world as it is, is the world declining to show its face to the one who meets it armed.
