Academia demonstrates neurolinguistic mimicry: Entire disciplines develop what one might call “inoculation theater”: adopting just enough progressive or pluralistic language to appear self-critical, while changing nothing fundamental. For instance, a department might add buzzwords like “intersectional,” “transformative,” or “decolonizing” to its mission statements – a linguistic mimicry of deeper change. But often this is performative, a mimicry that co-opts the terms of true critique and sells them back as institutional branding.
